Eighty to eighty-five percent of the debris generated from asphalt shingles is disposed of in landfills, where it will never biodegrade. Asphalt shingles can be used effectively in paving, particularly highway paving, because they have essentially the same material composition as paving asphalt. They are easily recyclable and can be put in larger quantities to asphalt pavement. Shingles are composed of a mixture of asphalt cement, hard aggregate, and fibre, just as hot mix asphalt.
